Bereavement & Grief Counselling

Losing someone you care about is one of life's most difficult experiences. You don't have to go through it alone.

Understanding Grief and Loss

Grief can feel overwhelming, confusing, and isolating. You might feel sad one moment and angry the next, or find yourself struggling to make sense of everyday life. You might feel numb, exhausted, or unable to concentrate. All of this is completely normal.

There's no "right way" to grieve, and there's no timeline for how long it should take. Everyone's experience of loss is unique, and your feelings are valid whatever they may be.

Grief isn't just about losing someone to death. It can also come from other significant losses in life—the end of a relationship, losing a job, changes in health, or even the loss of hopes and dreams you once had.

Bereavement counselling and grief counselling both describe the same kind of support—someone to talk to as you come to terms with loss. Grief can sometimes bring on a period of low mood or depression too; if that feels like a bigger part of what you're going through, our depression counselling page may also help.

How Bereavement Counselling Can Help

A Safe Space to Talk

Counselling provides a confidential space where you can express your feelings without worrying about burdening others or being judged.

Process Your Emotions

Grief can bring up complex, sometimes conflicting emotions. Counselling helps you understand and work through these feelings at your own pace.

Find Ways to Cope

Your counsellor can help you develop healthy coping strategies and find ways to manage difficult days and moments.

Move Forward

Counselling doesn't mean forgetting or "getting over" your loss. It's about finding a way to carry your grief while still living your life.

What to Expect from Sessions

Your first session is a chance to talk about what's brought you to counselling and what you'd like support with. Your counsellor will listen and help you feel comfortable.

In ongoing sessions, you can talk about whatever feels important to you—memories of the person you've lost, how you're coping day-to-day, difficult emotions, or anything else on your mind. You're in control of what you share and when.

Sessions are 50 minutes long and take place by phone or video call, whichever you prefer. This means you can have your session from somewhere you feel comfortable and safe, wherever you are in the UK.

There's no set timeframe for grief. Some people find a few sessions helpful, while others benefit from longer-term support. We work at your pace and you can continue for as long as feels right for you.

Is it too soon (or too late) for bereavement counselling?

There's no "right time" to seek support. Whether your loss is recent or happened years ago, counselling can help. Grief doesn't follow a timeline, and support is available whenever you need it.
